Funeral arrangements set for Dr. Richard Smalley

Visitation and viewing were Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 5-8 p.m. at George H. Lewis Funeral Home, located at 1010 Bering Drive. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, located at 6400 Woodway Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donation be made to the Smalley-Curl Innovation Fund.

Nanotech pioneer, Nobel laureate Richard Smalley dead at 62
Nobel laureate Richard Smalley, co-discoverer of the buckyball and one of the best-known and respected scientists in nanotechnology, died Oct. 28 in Houston after a long battle with cancer. He was 62.

Smalley testified before the U.S. House of Representatives regarding the proposal to establish a National Nanotechology Intiative in 1999
 
In 2002, Smalley again testified before Congress on the nation's impending energy crisis
 
While receiving cancer treatment in Houston, Smalley wrote a letter to Hope College, accepting the school's Distinguished Alumni Award
